My current work explores recycling and the necessity of this function in society and on the planet where I’m particularly concerned with representing the natural recycling and decomposition performed by Fungi. I am interested in conceptualising this vital role by constructing my artwork from the cardboard insides of toilet rolls and in the process recycling everyday products into artworks. I have been collecting toilet rolls over the past four months randomly in my day to day travels and also collecting them from friends interested in my project.

I have made several different types of fungi from the cardboard rolls such as the common edible horse mushroom, bracket fungi and small field fungus. The colour of the recycled cardboard (of which is the most common in my collection) matches nicely with plain cement, beige paint and dirty white paint commonly used/ seen in urban street architecture.

The concept is that the level of recycling should be directly linked to the level of consumption, where I am using the metaphor of fungi, which naturally pops up and multiplies to decompose excess plant matter and then disappears when the demand has subsided. It must be noted that fungi can also be destructive, for example ‘wood rot’ fungi and my artwork aims to emphasis the fine-line of balance to maintain harmony in the natural environment.
