How To Select the Right Door Position To Improve Room Flow
If you buy a pre-built home you don’t have a lot of choices regarding where the internal doors go. In most cases, they are already fitted. Unless you plan to do extensive renovations you’re going to have to accept them where they are.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t replace the doors with something a little more stylish, such as one of these Parkwood doors.
However, when you decide to self-build a new home you will have complete control over the layout, flow, and where to position internal doors. It’s worth noting that 50% of new homes are self-build, you’re in good company.
There are several things you need to consider to get the room flow right while positioning doors.
The Flow
If you pause to look at the layout of your new home, before it has been built, you’ll want to envision what it’s like to come in through the front door and move through the house. It can help you create your final design. For instance, as you enter you may want to remove your shoes and coat. You need a spot straight away that encourages you to do this as you head through the entrance and into your favourite room.
This needs to be the logical route from your entry, allowing you to pass through the different rooms. The key is to imagine your usual routine and how this would fit into a house. This will help you define where the rooms are in your self-build and where the doors should be.
Opening Pattern
Every door can open inward or outward. When creating your own home you get to choose. It’s worth noting that smaller rooms tend to work better if the door opens outward, it maximizes the space in the room.
But, doors can also be better opening outward in larger rooms, this will depend more on where you envision your furniture going. If it’s too close to the door an outward opening door is a better choice.
Equally, you need to think about the passage or room outside the door. It’s important to decide if the door can open outward or if it will be inconvenient.
To help work out the door position and if it is realistic you should sketch each room, including furniture. You’ll then be able to see the impact of opening the door one way or the other.
Style Of Door
While considering the position of internal doors you should spare a few moments to consider why types of doors best suit your needs. Although the traditional option is to have a door that swings open, there are other options.
You can choose a bi-fold door where space is limited. Or, if you prefer, you can opt for a door that slides, some are even capable of sliding into the wall.
It’s worth taking a look at the internal door options currently available and choosing the style that reflects your personal taste and the room you have available.
