Top Plumbing Things to Do Before Going on Vacation

Going on vacation is an exciting time and you will probably spend most of your pre-trip time trying to get everything ready for your holiday and plan what activities you’ll be undertaking. However, before you take off, you should spare a few moments to check the following plumbing items.

It could save you from coming back to a flooded house or worse!

Get Your Plumber’s Details

If you don’t already have a plumber you use then check out this reputable plumber Cronulla. Give them a call to let them know who you are. Ideally, if you have time before you go away get them to inspect your plumbing. It will alert you to any issues and help to ensure they know your home.

You’ll then be able to give their details to whoever is keeping an eye on your home. It’s advisable to get a trusted friend or neighbour to check your home a couple of times when you’re away. If they have the plumber’s details they can contact them in an emergency.

Turn The Water Off

This should be done very close to leaving time. Turning the water off to your home at the main valve will dramatically reduce the likelihood of anything bad happening. It’s a good idea to turn the main valve off before you go away and check that it stops the water flow. You can then do it confidently before you leave.

Drain The Pipes

To help ensure there are no issues, once you have turned off the water open the faucets and any sprinkler system to allow excess water to drain off. Remember to close them again.

It is also essential to remember that some water will get stuck in the pipes. When you return and turn the water back on, make sure you flush the old water out first.

Turn Off The Water Heater

You will probably turn off your electricity when you go away. However, sometimes this isn’t possible, depending on what appliances need to be left on.

To ensure you don’t have an issue with your water heater and an unexpected and expensive repair bill, make sure you turn the water heater off before you leave on vacation.

Clear Gutters

This can be done in the week or two before you go away. Simply check all your gutters and downpipes to ensure they are clean and the water can flow freely. Clogged gutters cause rain to overflow and pour down your exterior walls. This can cause damp in your house. That’s not something you want to deal with the moment you return from vacation.

Test Your Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump in your basement then you should test it before you go away. All you have to do is pour water into the pit where your pump lives and make sure it comes on and pumps the water out. If not, get it looked at before you go away. It’s essential to prevent your house from being damaged by a flood.
